PayPal Fee Calculator: International & Domestic Transfer Pricing

Using PayPal for international invoicing or money transfer as a freelancer? We strongly recommend that you understand the fee structure – use this international PayPal fee calculator to find out more. More information

PayPal charges a flat fee per invoice and a percentage fee for international transactions (4.4% instead of 2.9% for domestic transactions), which can make things expensive – it also offers FX rates which may differ from the mid-market rates if you're sending from one country to another (e.g. USD to GBP).

The charges mean that you could be paying a lot to receive money using PayPal, especially if you're invoicing in USD but based outside of the US and receiving money in GBP, Euro or Canadian dollars. While fees are a common expense for freelancers, you should be trying to minimize the fees you are charged to receive funds in each transaction.

Use the below PayPal fee calculator (international and domestic) to work out exactly what the fees could be...

Tips for international invoicing

Why we recommend TransferWise instead:

Transferwise is an online money transfer platform that gives account holders international bank details so that you can receive money in different currencies – with zero fees. We recommend TransferWise for all freelancers and use it extensively ourselves for international money transfers, invoice payments and maintaining foreign currency balances (e.g. making supplier payments in USD). Why we recommend Revolut instead:

Revolut supports transfers from employers in multiple currencies, and uses the interbank exchange rate employed by banks. It's a current account, so you can maintain a balance in multiple currencies and you won't get charged if you're in a foreign country and make a transaction.
